Asphalt Shingle Roof

Asphalt roofing materials have been manufactured since th1890's.Approximately 80-90 percent of all roofs in the United States are asphalt shingles.They are attractive, versatile and reistant to fire and wind.

Asphalt shingles are comprised of roofing felt, saturated with asphalt and imbedded with a layer of mineral granules. Asphalt shingles are the most common roofing

material. Asphalt shingle roofs are inexpensive and require little maintenance.

An organic asphalt shingle roof can be expected to last 15-20 years.Heavyweight

laminated fiberglass shingles will last 20-30

years, there are even 50 year shingles. When determining what life expectancy to choose, think of how many tears you are planning to live in your home.

Asphalt shingles are made of flat rectangle shaped roofing elements which overlaps each other.To increase their wind resitance,many asphalt shingles come witha self-sealing thermoplastic adhesive strip. Heat from the sun makes the sticky and helps to bond each shingle to the one above it.The adhesive strip take longer to bond in cold weather or when the roof has a low slope or when the roof is shaded. Or if the roof faces north or east.

Tile Roofs

Clay tiles provide a distinctive apperance. Beautiful and durable. More costly than aspahlt shingles.They are available in different patterns.

A well constructed clay roof can last up yo fifty years.It cost more to install than any other type of roofing because the materials are more expensive amd requires a strong frame to support the heavy load of the tiles.It needs very little maintenance.

concrete tile is cheaper to make than clay tile.A concrete tile has weather checks on it's underside and water locks on its sides to keep wind-driven moisture and water run-off from getting under the tile .

Some clay tiles interlock while others are joined with mortar . Concrete tiles have several set of interlocking lugs.Clay tiles are glazed or unglazed.Concrete is either coloured on its surface or throughout its body.

Flat Roofs

Built-up roofs are made from alternating layers of roofing felt and hot tar,covered witha protective layer of gravel.They are more commonly found on commercail builldings but are suited for flat roofs or roofs with a slope of less than 3-in-12.

There are three types of built up roofing :

1.Aggregate - surfaced roofing -which uses a layer of aggregate embedded in a flood coat of bitumen.

2.Smooth surface roofing-which uses a glaze coat of bituminous or fibrated aluminum materials.

3.Mineral surface roofing-which uses a granule surfaced sheet.

Bitumen makes a BUR waterproof. Felt make sit strong and flexible so your roof can contract.
